Chapter Nineteen

Marc didn’t mean to spend too much time in the shower, but once he got under the hot spray, he couldn’t help but enjoy it. The dirt accumulated over days of running through the woods, plus a few battles, sloughed from his skin leaving him refreshed. In body, at least. His mind though, that was another matter.

What happened?

And he wasn’t referring to the ghoul or even the events in the woods that led to his meeting Thad, the annoying vampire. He was more curious about the dream, the dream he’d shared with Toni. A dream where he shared Toni with Thad.

A connection existed between him and the she-wolf, of that he was certain. The more time he spent with her, the more he wanted to claim her. Hell, the only reason he hadn’t given in to his wolf’s frenzied demand was because taking Toni by force would only push her away—and, give root to the kernel of evil he feared nestled within him.

I won’t fuck this up.

Something he’d overhead in the dream before interrupting, something Thad and Toni said about ingesting memories, struck a chord with Marc. He couldn’t help but recall his inhalation of Roderick’s ashes. Ashes he was pretty certain Thaddeus carried in his trunk. Which begged the question why?

Why would anyone want the remains of a sick vampire?

Why, to partake of the passed ones power, of course.

Where this ghostly knowledge or certainty came from, he wasn’t sure, but if he had to wager a guess, he’d say Roderick, or the memories Roderick carried. Ghostly remembrances, events seen through a different set of eyes and corrupted ideals, all that and more flitted through Marc’s brain making him doubt his sanity. Making him fear for his mind…and his soul.

Given he couldn’t truly be sure his actions were his own, was it any wonder he held off on marking Antonia? Even if Pack law gave him every right to claim a she-wolf without a guardian, was he truly the best choice for her?

Besides, why force it when his gut said she’d come to him on her own? He couldn’t forget how she’d melted in his arms and thoroughly enjoyed their kiss. He couldn’t stop reliving the moment in the dream, the embrace. And not just the one of the lips, but the body to body one where he’d pressed against her back and Thad pressed from the front, cocooning their woman in protection. Pleasuring her, both at once as Pack lore dictated.

Except Thad wasn’t pack. He was a vampire, and Marc was nuts to even think of sharing a woman, any woman, with a two timing backstabbing bloodsucker.

Or was he? Thad hadn’t done anything yet to earn distrust. On the contrary, the asshole saved their lives, came to their rescue and provided help even though he could have walked away. Hell, he could have fled with Toni, leaving Marc in his dust, and yet Thad didn’t. Marc wasn’t an idiot, he knew the vampire was more powerful than him,
